1. Does everything I donate go to the people in the shelters?

Yes, all yarn that is donated is used to knit the hats.  Knitting needles that are donated will be kept in our inventory so that we can reuse them and have them available for anyone that wants to knit for the shelters. Monetary donations to Christ Community Church will be used for the Samaritan/Outreach programs that deal with shelters.  We do not accept monetary donations at this time.  We purchase the yarn ourselves and donate our time and the cost of the yarn.

2. How can I participate if I don’t knit?

You are welcome to join our group once we set up meetings, learn to knit, or just meet some of the knitters and examine the hats/projects.  Also, you may buddy up with someone from the group and transport the finished hats to various shelters around the area. You may also participate if you crochet!

3. Is the yarn I donate tax deductible?

Not at this time – as we are just a private group donating our own time and money. Perhaps in the future if we feel the need to declare non-profit status we will do so.

4.  What is the approximate cost of making a hat?  What supplies do I need?

I have used a simple Red Heart skein of yarn (approximately $2-3.00) and can make 2 hats out of each skein.  So, the cost is roughly $1.50 per hat.  Your time is of course, priceless, and VERY much appreciated.  Cost of knitting needles – anywhere from .50 at a thrift store to $7.00 in a store.  You just need yarn and needles and the will to do it.

5. Why do you use the cheap yarn?

We use Red Heart yarn since it is inexpensive, does not shrink, can be washed and has a lot of different color variations which makes for a very nice selection of hats.  This makes them a little more custom and personal for the wearers.  If we received nice expensive yarn, we would certainly use that as well.
