Here is my “plan” for hats using Size 8 set of 4 double pointed needles – see photo to the left to see what they look like. There will be 4 in a packet, not 2! Girls/Boys Multicolor hats Use multi colored yarn (I use Red Heart). 1 skein should produce about 2 hats. Cast on 72 stitches, divided over the 3 needles. Fourth needle is used to knit. K1, P1 rib throughout the whole hat, except for the last 3 rows. Knit until about 8-8.5 inches, then start your decrease rows. Decrease: 3rd to last row K2tog all
the way across. 2nd to last row K2tog or P2tog all the way across. Last
row K2tog all the way across. You should end up with about 9 stitches at
the end. Grab a large eye sewing needle and take the thread through the
loops that are left on the knitting needles. Pull tight and tie off and
work it into the inside of the hat. Sew in the starting thread. Boy’s Solid Color Cabled HatsCast on 84 stitches, divided over the 3 needles. K1, P1 rib for at least a couple of inches to form brim. Section off a small part to produce the cable design. (10 to 14 stitches is a good size) K1,P1 around that section. Knit until about 8 -8.5 inches, then start your decrease rows. Decrease: Same last 3 rows as above. You should end up with about 10 stitches at the end. Grab a large needle and take the thread through the loops that are left on the needles. Pull tight and tie off and work it into the inside of the hat. Sew in the starting thread. Put about 4 purl stitches before and after these cables for the contrast so you can see them better. Cable patterns I used: 12 stitch braid cable: Row 1: C4F,k4,C4B Row 2: Knit Row 3: K2, C4F,C4B,K2 Row 4: Knit Row 5: K4, C4B, K4 Row 6: Knit Rep these 6 rows. 8 stitch plait braid: Row 1 and all odd rows: Knit Row 2: K2, C4B, K2 Row 4: C4B, K4 Row 6: K2, C4F, K2 Row 8: K4, C4F.
